Option 40, the finale: three physical displays in one widget.

**Split-flap board:**
a 160-flap station board that flips through its letter reel to spell words, then paints the bot's face in grey tiles.

**LED matrix sign:**
48×32 glowing dots with a scrolling message.

**Shadow-puppet theatre:**
a candlelit screen where shadows sharpen or blur with puppet distance.

**Running total for the whole series (estimates):**
**All 40**
**~204,000**
These cover visible output only. Hidden reasoning isn't included, and I can't meter it.

**Split-flap board (16 × 10 flaps):**
- Every flap is a physical reel: blank, A–Z, 0–9, punctuation, then five grey tiles.
- A flap can only move forward one card at a time. Changing "A" to "B" takes one flip; "B" back to "A" takes the whole reel.
- The board cycles through: HELLO → bot face (grey tiles) → blink → glance → "40 OF 40 / THANK YOU!"
- The "Stagger" slider staggers start times, so the change ripples like a station board.
**LED matrix (48 × 32 = 1,536 dots):**
- Scrolling text in a hand-built 5×7 pixel font, and the bot hopping on the bottom rows.
- Only 8 brightness steps. Unlit dots stay faintly visible.
- The "Flicker" option dims rows in turn, the way real signs refresh a few rows at a time.
- "Dead pixels" adds stuck-on and stuck-off dots, the sign's version of wear.
**Shadow theatre:**
- A candle-like lamp sits behind a fabric screen.
- Shadows are drawn from 14 slightly different points on the lamp. Overlapping them makes soft edges honestly, the way real area lights do.
Drag "Puppet distance":

- Close to the screen, the bot's shadow is small and crisp.
- Pulled back toward the lamp, it grows and blurs.
- The eyes are holes cut in the puppet, so light shines through them. The bird and the tree are separate cut-outs at different distances.
**How to get an API key (the pattern is the same for each):**
- Create an account on the provider's site.
- Open its developer or API settings page.
- Generate a new key, copy it, and store it somewhere private.
- Tell me which provider you've chosen. I'll explain the exact next step before anything needs the key. Don't paste keys into shared documents.
**The journey through time**

**Choosing a technique by goal**
```
Want warmth and craft? → 21 clay · 28 watercolour · 33 paper Want instant brand recognition? → 1 principles · 14 toon · 34 blueprint Want interactivity? → 16 jelly · 19 gaze · 35 boids · 38 audio Want nostalgia? → 5 Game Boy · 12 CRT · 23 VHS Want wonder? → 15 SDF morph · 17 particles · 25 bullet time
```

**What stayed constant across all 40**
```
round body + two slanted capsule eyes at fixed positions (35°) → survived: 1 pixel colour, 4 shades, 3 colours, ASCII, wireframe, ink, dots, shards, flocks, circles, chemistry, flaps and shadows
```

**Critical thinking:**
your bot stayed recognisable in all 40 styles. Which one feature did the most work, the round silhouette or the slanted eyes? Test it by removing each in your head. What does that say about how to protect the design legally and visually?

**Lateral thinking:**
a character that survives 40 media could live anywhere: sticker packs, a split-flap wall in an office lobby, a shadow-puppet live show, a drone swarm. Which physical, real-world version would surprise people most?

**First principles:**
across every option, animation came down to changing something over time: position, colour, palette, frequency, chemistry, physics or viewpoint. What's the smallest possible change that still makes the bot feel alive?

Pick your top 5 options. I'll build a single shareable showcase page, a mini gallery where each style runs live, with a short caption on the technique, and publish it as a page you can send to others.
